Sébastien Jouan

Principal – Acoustics

Sébastien is a design-led acoustician and acts as project director on the projects he is involved in. He has a wealth of experience in leading multi-disciplinary teams, specialising in the acoustic design of performing arts centres, museums and galleries, music schools, educational buildings, recording studios, public spaces, urban soundscapes, and sonic art installations. He’s also known for his work in 3D auralisation systems and the creation of sound environments, as well as his collaborations with artists on sound projects.

Prior to joining us, Sébastien was the Regional Director of AECOM, where he led the Arts & Culture sector for their global acoustic team and led their Middle East acoustic team. He also started the Academic Alliance between AECOM and the University of York focusing on auralisation with the AudioLab. He also worked at Arup Acoustics for 14 years, where he started and led their acoustic team in Scotland as well as leading their Scottish Arts & Culture sector projects. His consulting work here included around 250 projects which were mostly in the performing arts sector, and his other notable achievement there was his design and management of their SoundLabs in London and Scotland, for which he also acted as European spokesman. The first SoundLab, which he created in collaboration with the Glasgow School of Art’s Digital Design Studio, used innovative ideas to integrate a 3D visualization walkthrough and was presented in a WIRED magazine article in 2010. He’s also been a tutor for the London Bartlett School of Architecture and on the board of directors of Cryptic Theatre in Glasgow, a contemporary art house with performances fusing music, sound, art, and multimedia.

Sébastien is currently a member of the Institute of Acoustics (IOA) and of the International Society for the Performing Arts (ISPA).
