Chapman University, Marybelle and Sebastian P. Musco Center for the Arts

Orange, California, USA

Theatre Projects and the design team collaborated to build incredible versatility into the 88,000 square foot center’s theatre. To accommodate full flying capability for a 120,000-pound orchestra shell, we designed specialty hoist machinery and carefully coordinated grid slots to lift and store the shell, which demounts, separates, and flies into the stagehouse in less than an hour. The multipurpose theatre features a large stage measuring 62 feet wide by 36 feet high and 50 feet deep. With the versatility afforded by a full fly tower, 50 line sets, two orchestra lifts, and high-tech LED performance lighting, dimming, and relay systems, the university can stage ambitious and highly technical student and traveling shows. Additionally, the Musco Center features nine dressing rooms, green rooms, and a state-of-the-art recording studio, tailored to the education of audio engineering students, featuring cutting-edge AV and Internet2 technology.
