Dominion Energy Center, Carpenter Theatre and Libby S. Gottwald Playhouse
The renovated 1,800-seat Carpenter Theatre is the centerpiece of this a new performing arts complex in downtown Richmond. The 1928 movie house was repurposed into the Carpenter Center for the Arts in 1983, and has now been reborn again as the Carpenter Theatre following a top-to-bottom renovation that included a new stagehouse, re-seating, and enlarged lobby area, among many other improvements. The project also included the arts complex's seamless expansion into an adjacent office building, which was renamed Dorothy Pauley Square and now includes the intimate, 200-seat Libby Gottwald Community Playhouse, the multi-purpose Rhythm Hall, an art gallery, classrooms, and office spaces.
Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts

This 456,000 square foot complex consists of two performance spaces housed under an impressive 150-foot high, barrel-vaulted glass roof. The Kimmel’s 2,500-seat concert hall was inspired by the cello, and the curved geometry of the room and wood finishes resemble the shape and texture of the instrument. The intimate hall wraps the audience around the stage on three tiers of 360-degree balconies, creating an intimate and undiluted connection between performers and spectators. The hall is an ideal space for orchestral music as well as touring groups and other events. The smaller of the two venues, the Perelman Theater, features a large turntable, half of which contains a permanent orchestra shell that rotates upstage to reveal a fully equipped 40’ wide proscenium theatre. Seating in the Perelman is mounted on hydraulic risers. The seats can be removed and the risers lowered to create a flat floor for banquets and parties.

Duke University, Rubenstein Arts Center

We designed eight incredibly versatile rooms in the Rubenstein Art Center in order to foster interdisciplinary education and cultivate unrestricted creativity. A flexible 200-seat theatre features a 360-degree balcony, technical ledge, tension wire grid, hybrid incandescent/LED lighting system, and a wall of immense floor-to-ceiling windows with blackout shades. Retractable risers and movable seating platforms allow for arena, traverse, flat floor, or thrust arrangements. For the Dance Program, we designed a double-height glass studio with a grid, performance lighting, portable stage, and demountable barres. Six multipurpose studios serve as blank canvases for experimentation and feature pipe grids, performance lighting, soundproofing, oversized sliding doors, and all but two have built-in sound and projection systems. Two studios are tailored to dance with sprung floors and dance barres, and two toward film production with added AV and electrical infrastructure. Additional arts spaces in the 75,000 square foot center include visual arts studios, lounges, a “makerspace,” radio station, and 100-seat cinema.
