St James Cavalier Center of Creativity (Spazju Kreattiv)
St James Cavalier—a walled defensive structure over eighteen meters high—was originally built to keep unwanted visitors out of Valletta. Over the years the structure and function of the cavalier has been transformed many times, ultimately resulting in a completely renovated and modernized space. Today’s St James Cavalier is a versatile arts center housing Spazju Kreattiv, a public cultural organization committed to promoting all forms of creative expression, awareness, and cultural exchange. The main 152-seat adaptable theatre-in-the-round is set inside a former cylindrical water reservoir. Its interior was prefabricated off-site in steel sections and lowered into the drum of the reservoir from above. Elsewhere, the cavalier’s vaults were redesigned to incorporate a 105-seat cinema and 100-seat music recital room. The theatre, together with the other various spaces around the building, is also used for seminars, lectures, masterclasses, workshops, performances, launches, and exhibitions.
