University of Virginia, Ruth Caplin Theatre
Built organically into a sloping hillside, this beautiful thrust theatre is an addition to the university’s 20,500 square foot drama building, and offers an ideal environment for performing or teaching drama, dance, or film. An intimate seating configuration wraps the audience more than halfway around the stage and specialized curved catwalks hang over the audience. A sprung floor, high–definition projector, and retractable screen add to the versatility of the space. A glass facade stretches across the back of the room and a set of automatic blinds can lower to blackout the theatre for performances or open to flood the theatre with sunlight as needed.
