Yto Barrada: Le Grand Soir
The inaugural interactive outdoor installation by Yto Barrada, Le Grand Soir, references Moroccan Brutalism and Barrada’s personal lore with the pyramid structure. The thirty-inch modular blocks are formed with concrete and stack on top of each other. The installation will be featured in the courtyard of MoMA PS1 for two years.
Theatre Projects assisted with general layout, foundation detailing, fabrication details for 12 different block styles, mechanical and structural connection detailing, finishing details and NYC DOB approvals. The challenge Lab successfully addressed for this project was how to achieve the artist’s vision while creating a functional work of art that invites the audience to engage with and experience the art while ensuring safety and upholding through all-weather terrain.
