Duke University, Rubenstein Arts Center
The Ruby’s flexible 170-seat studio theatre features a technical ledge, tension wire grid, hybrid incandescent/LED lighting system, and a wall of immense floor-to-ceiling windows with blackout shades. Retractable risers and movable seating platforms allow for arena, traverse, flat floor, or thrust arrangements. On the second floor, a double-height glass studio supports the dance program and six multipurpose studios were developed as blank canvases for rehearsal, classes, small performances, and more. The 75,000-square-foot center also features a 100-seat cinema, radio station, visual arts studios, “makerspace,” and The Ruby Lounge—a study and gathering space that transforms for performance utilizing a sprung floor, lighting grid, audio and projection capabilities, and soundproofing.
