Rochester Institute of Technology, Student Hall of Exploration and Development
One of the country’s leading engineering schools, RIT has been committed to putting the “A” in STEAM since its inception. With their new complex, they looked to further that commitment, so we created a series of highly flexible spaces for music and theatrical performances, rehearsals, lectures, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Adjacent to maker spaces and engineering shops, a new 150-seat flexible studio theatre will allow students and staff to collaborate across academic and artistic disciplines thanks to a robust infrastructure of rigging, power, lighting and audiovisual equipment. The facility—a 150,000 gsf mix of renovation and new construction—will also feature a “hub” space with a pop-up stage for performance and exhibits, a music recital space, dance studio, practice rooms, shops, and recording studio. Once completed, the SHED, will serve as a front door to the campus, a lively public and student gathering space, a showcase for student achievement and a destination for technological innovation and artistic discovery.
