The Music Center at Strathmore
This 1,976-seat concert hall has a wide-range of open staging capabilities to accommodate classical and popular music and dance presentations. To achieve more intimate performances, we designed the hall so the ceiling lowers toward the stage and the balcony wraps 360 degrees around the room, providing additional seating or musician support space behind the stage.
Two other balcony levels are broken up into stepped-down seating boxes, which draw the performers and audience together. Featuring a one-of-a-kind variable acoustic system, sound-absorbing curtains, and seamlessly integrated (invisible) speech and sound reinforcement systems, the venue can be ‘tuned’ precisely to suit each performance. The center also features an arts education wing with practice rooms, classrooms, and several specialty rehearsal rooms, two of which feature 40-foot ceilings for orchestral and choral rehearsals—one even has its own acoustic canopy and drapes. The stunning facility is set on 11 acres of rolling pastoral landscape, and provides a refuge of music and arts education just minutes away from the nation’s capitol.
