Dominion Energy Center, Carpenter Theatre and Libby S. Gottwald Playhouse
The renovated 1,800-seat Carpenter Theatre is the centerpiece of this a new performing arts complex in downtown Richmond. The 1928 movie house was repurposed into the Carpenter Center for the Arts in 1983, and has now been reborn again as the Carpenter Theatre following a top-to-bottom renovation that included a new stagehouse, re-seating, and enlarged lobby area, among many other improvements. The project also included the arts complex's seamless expansion into an adjacent office building, which was renamed Dorothy Pauley Square and now includes the intimate, 200-seat Libby Gottwald Community Playhouse, the multi-purpose Rhythm Hall, an art gallery, classrooms, and office spaces.
