Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts
This 456,000 square foot complex consists of two performance spaces housed under an impressive 150-foot high, barrel-vaulted glass roof. The Kimmel’s 2,500-seat concert hall was inspired by the cello, and the curved geometry of the room and wood finishes resemble the shape and texture of the instrument. The intimate hall wraps the audience around the stage on three tiers of 360-degree balconies, creating an intimate and undiluted connection between performers and spectators. The hall is an ideal space for orchestral music as well as touring groups and other events. The smaller of the two venues, the Perelman Theater, features a large turntable, half of which contains a permanent orchestra shell that rotates upstage to reveal a fully equipped 40’ wide proscenium theatre. Seating in the Perelman is mounted on hydraulic risers. The seats can be removed and the risers lowered to create a flat floor for banquets and parties.
