Neal S. Blaisdell Center, Tom Moffatt Waikiki Shell
In order to better accommodate the community, businesses, and promoters while the Blaisdell Center is under redevelopment, the City of Honolulu needed to upgrade Waikiki Shell to support different a wider range of performance types. Theatre Projects designed a new freestanding truss that spans the performance area to accommodate additional performance equipment and increase production capability. The truss can be climbed from the inside, with lifelines in both arches and in each spoke running downstage. The shell-shaped facility provides a sophisticated stage for musical performances, and the new truss system can support up to 16,000 lbs of equipment, including LED walls, loudspeakers, performance lighting, projection screens, and other scenic elements.
