Wheaton College, Armerding Center for Music and the Arts
As a college that enthusiastically celebrates the joy and wonder of music and encourages every student to engage with the art form, Wheaton’s facilities and their mission were woefully misaligned. So we helped develop a plan to create a world-class performance and education center through adaptive reuse and new construction. Phase I of the project included the repurposing of a former math and science building into a versatile music education facility with highly versatile spaces. In the resurrected facility, students can rehearse, take classes, socialize, and perform. The centerpiece of the 51,000 square foot renovation is a 101-seat recital hall, which features adjustable acoustic elements and an intimate artist/performer dynamic. Phase II of the Armerding Center will include the razing of an adjacent building and construction of a new 29,000 square feet venue in its place. The new building will feature a 648-seat concert hall and a glass lobby will connect the new and renovated portions.
