Moses Brown School, Woodman Family Community and Performance Center
This historic Quaker school needed a space that could meet an intensive and diverse programming schedule—from morning religious services to afternoon drama classes and evening banquets. So we designed a flexible and intimate 550-seat courtyard theatre within the new 34,000 square foot Woodman Center. The versatile room uses seating risers and motorized platforms to easily transform between proscenium, arena, thrust, and flat floor. A wall of double-height windows allows natural light into the room, and when the theatre needs to be dark for performances and movies, MechoShades can quickly be deployed. With side boxes and galleries, the design of the room stacks the audience and wraps them around the stage, which leads to intimate performances and creates a smaller footprint. The room's modest footprint creates a volume more appropriate for student-actors.
