Loomis Chaffee School, Nichols Center for Theater and Dance
The performing arts are a big deal at this prestigious boarding school. Their theatre program includes instruction in acting for stage and camera, technical theatre, playwriting, and directing. And their dance program teaches classes in ballet, jazz, contemporary, tap, and hip-hop, as well as choreography and composition. So, the school needed modern spaces to fit their varied and growing needs.
The school’s existing Norris Ely Orchard Theater, affectionately known as “The Neo,” is being enlarged to provide seating for 200 people. We’re also expanding the main stage, adding an orchestra pit, and updating the performance equipment to the latest technology. The newly renovated theatre will host three major performances each year, including an annual musical, which brings together students from the theatre, dance, and music programs. The project also includes an all-new dance studio with sprung floors and mirrored walls and a flexible 60-seat studio theatre for rehearsals, teaching, and some smaller productions through the year. In addition, the facility will include new dressing rooms, a green room, and a scene and costume shop.
