The Lowry
The Lowry is one of the UK’s most successful arts centers, having transformed a derelict docklands site into a thriving cultural hub. It sparked an urban regeneration in Salford Quays, completely revitalizing the surrounding area into a mixed-use property development and an international hub for technology, innovation, and creativity.
Our involvement on the project began in 1988 when we provided preliminary development advice on the arts center to the City of Salford, including a feasibility study and design brief. We then worked closely with Michael Wilford and Partners on the design project, which contains a 1,730-seat lyric theatre for touring opera, ballet and musicals, 473-seat adaptable theatre, the Lowry Galleries (home to the largest public collection of works by Salford’s celebrated painter, LS Lowry), an interactive Artworks Gallery for children, restaurants, and retail outlets.
