Decrypt the Pantheon

Paris, France

In honor of Bastille Day (July 14), Theatre Projects provided acoustic advice for a one-day-only sound installation in France’s national mausoleum, The Pantheon.

Directional speakers were hung from stationary balloons which floated throughout the building, allowing visitors to approach individual crypts and hear the voices of legendary French citizens— Victor Hugo, Marie Curie, Voltaire—speaking about the value and hard-fought nature of liberty. A particular challenge for Theatre Projects’ acoustics team was to dampen and isolate sound within the voluminous and reverberant marble-clad crypt.
